Iran, Uruguay Keen to Boost Trade Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Senior officials from Iran and Uruguay called for efforts to bolster bilateral economic relations, with both sides stressing the need for facilitating banking transactions.

In a Monday meeting in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Uruguay’s Vice-President Raul Fernando Sendic Rodriguez discussed a range of issues, with a focus on ways to remove trade barriers.

Urging stronger ties between the two countries’ business people, Zarif highlighted the significance of financial transactions and banking issues.

With the removal of banking barriers at the first step, ample opportunities will be available for the two countries to promote economic cooperation, the Iranian minister explained.

For his part, the Uruguayan vice-president unveiled plans for holding a session of joint economic commission with Iran with the aim of stimulating bilateral trade, establishing banking mechanisms and boosting relations in other fields.

Sendic’s visit comes against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

The JCPOA came into force on January 16 and terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
