Iran, Uruguay Voice Readiness to Deepen Ties

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – At the conclusion of Uruguayan vice-president’s official visit to Iran, Tehran and Montevideo expressed readiness to boost bilateral relations in various fields, from trade to the fight on terrorism.

A joint press statement released by the two countries at the end of Raul Fernando Sendic Rodriguez’s three-day visit to Iran hailed close diplomatic relations, saying the two countries are prepared to promote cooperation in political, economic, trade, cultural, scientific, agricultural and health areas.

It also said both countries condemn all forms of extremism that have jeopardized international peace and security.

According to the statement, the two sides have also agreed to hold the 6th session of the Joint Economic and Commercial Commission of Iran and Uruguay in Montevideo in the second half of 2016.

During his stay in Tehran, Sendic held meetings with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other top officials.

The Uruguayan vice-president’s visit comes against the backdrop of a new wave of interest in ties with Iran after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 reached a conclusion over the text of the comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear program.

The JCPOA came into force on January 16 and terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
