World’s Major Cities Represent 70% of Global GDP: Iranian Economist

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Some 70 percent of global GDP (gross domestic product) in the world is being generated by the world’s major cities, an Iranian economist said.

Economy

Currently, 70 percent of the global GDP belong to large cities across the globe, Hossein Mohammadpour Zarandi said on Tuesday.
He added there will be 468 large cities in the world by 2030 with more than 60 percent of the world’s GDP.

Highlighting the rapid growth of urbanization in the world, Mohammadpour Zarandi said marginalization, urban poverty, environmental pollution particularly air pollution, traffic, cultural and social dilemmas are some of the major challenges of urban development.

The world’s economic gravitational pull is increasingly rotating around a relatively small number of powerful cities and metro areas.

The urban world is shifting and today a limited number of urban centers generate much of global GDP.
