Iran’s Zarif Urges Japan’s Active Role in Regional Stability

TOKYO (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called on the Japanese government to help efforts to promote stability in the Middle East region and counter terrorist groups.

Speaking at a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, in Tokyo on Wednesday, Zarif hailed the Islamic Republic as the “harbor of stability” and said Iran expects Japan to play “an active role” in promoting stability in the region, according to Tasnim dispatches.

“We expect Japan… to use its political links with other regional players and persuade them to withdraw their support for terrorists,” he said.

Zarif, who is in Japan on the last leg of an Asian tour, added that Tehran is ready to cooperate with Tokyo in efforts to establish stability and help boost economic prosperity in regional countries, including Afghanistan.

In recent years, the Middle East region has been plagued with Takfiri terrorist groups like Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), which are believed to have been created and supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist groups, which claim to be Islamic but whose actions are anything but, have been committing heinous crimes not only against non-Muslims, but mostly against Muslims in the region.

The Japanese top diplomat, for his part, pointed to the July 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and six world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and said his country supports vigorous implementation of the deal.

Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the deal in July 2015 and started implementing it on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear agreement terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.

However, Iranian officials have complained about the failure of the other side, especially the US, to fully implement the accord, as Iran still has problems in its banking transactions with other countries.
