FMs Mull Plan to Renovate Iranian Power Plants with Japanese Loan

TOKYO (Tasnim) – Foreign ministers of Iran and Japan discussed plans on Wednesday for renovation of two thermal power plants in Iran, to be financed by Japan.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart in Tokyo on Wednesday, Japan’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said negotiations have been held on renovation of two thermal power plants in Iran.

If implemented, the renovation plan will mark the first joint project between Iran and Japan, via their joint chamber of commerce, in the past 20 years, Kishida explained.

He also noted that Iran and Japan have reached mutual understanding on practical cooperation in a broad range of fields.

For his part, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said his talks with Kishida have led to good mutual understanding on a “yen loan” to develop and renovate Iranian thermal plants and of scientific and technological collaboration in future.

He also emphasized the necessity for a road map to Iran-Japan cooperation, given the abundant mutual interest in bilateral political and economic interaction, and the need for peace, security and stability in the Middle East and East Asia.

Heading a mainly trade delegation, Zarif arrived in Japan early Wednesday, after visiting India and China.

In comments upon his arrival in Tokyo, the top Iranian diplomat stated that economic issues are high on the agenda of his trip.
