Bahraini Activist Decries Foreign Support for Dictators

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A Bahraini opposition figure took a swipe at certain foreign countries that have trampled on democracy with the brazen support they have been giving to the Al Khalifa despotic regime.

The foreigners who have lent support for the Manama regime and for the Saudi kingdom have indeed disregarded democracy and left the Bahraini nation alone in the face of dictators, Saeed Shahabi, secretary general of the Bahrain Freedom Movement, told Tasnim on Thursday.

Six years after the onset of a peaceful uprising in Bahrain, he added, the popular movement continues to dominate the headlines and it is impossible to ignore the protests that have become a daily event in the streets of the Persian Gulf country.

The countries that keep diplomatic ties with the Al Khalifa regime and go on pretending that everything is alright in fact have their eye on lucrative projects and major contracts with the Bahraini and Saudi governments, Shahabi deplored.

He then highlighted the Bahraini nation’s determination to change the situation in a country ruled by a dictatorship.

Bahrain, a close ally of the US in the Persian Gulf region, has been witnessing protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.

Amnesty International and many other international rights organizations have frequently censured the Bahraini regime for the rampant human rights abuses against opposition groups and anti-regime protesters.
