Syrian Army Sends Reinforcements to Hama

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian army is sending reinforcements to face a major militant offensive in Hama province, a Syrian military said Wednesday, as terrorists pressed an attack in a western area.

The military source said the Takfiri groups had mobilized large numbers for the assault that was targeting towns including Soran, some 20 km (12 miles) north of Hama city, and Khattab, about 10 km northwest of it.

Battles were ongoing in both places, the military source said. "Reinforcements are now being sent," the source added, according to Reuters.

The assault is being spearheaded by Tahrir al-Sham terrorist groups. It got under way on Tuesday.

Over the past six years, Syria has been fighting foreign-sponsored militancy. UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura estimated in August that more than 400,000 people had been killed in the Syrian crisis until then. The UN has stopped its official casualty count in Syria, citing its inability to verify the figures it receives from various sources.
