Iran’s Top Diplomat Due in Russia Wednesday

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will travel to Russia on Wednesday for a series of diplomatic talks with Russian officials, a spokesperson said.

Heading a delegation, Zarif is going to visit Russia’s southwestern city of Sochi, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi announced.

The senior Iranian diplomat is scheduled to leave Tehran for Sochi on Wednesday morning for meetings and talks with Russian officials, he added.

Iran and Russia have formed a strong alliance in recent years, with both supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s legitimate government against foreign-backed militancy.

Moreover, since coming into force in January 2016 of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a nuclear deal between Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), Tehran and Moscow have ramped up efforts to boost bilateral trade.
