Syria Army Crosses to Eastern Bank of Euphrates in Key City
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Syrian government troops battling Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) have crossed to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor for the first time since they broke a siege on parts of the eastern city earlier this month, a report said.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops crossed from the southern suburb of Jafra on Monday, AP reported.
US-backed fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces have been advancing against Daesh militants along the eastern bank of the Euphrates, while Syrian government forces and their allies are pushing from the west.
The simultaneous advancements against Daesh have raised concerns of clashes between SDF and Syrian troops.
Syrian troops seized the al-Jafra district on Sunday after inflicting major losses on the terror group.
Last week, Syria’s army and allied fighters broke a years-long Daesh siege of the city of Deir ez-Zor, entering two government-held sections of the city that had been cut off from each other.
