Iran’s Foreign Minister Zarif Holds High-Profile Meetings at UN

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif held separate meetings with the UN secretary general and with his European counterparts at the United Nations headquarters in New York for talks on various international issues.

Zarif, who has travelled to New York for a United Nations General Assembly meeting on peace, held talks with top diplomats and officials on Tuesday.

In a meeting with the UN chief, Antonio Guterres, the two sides discussed the latest developments in the Middle East, especially in Syria and Yemen, and the UN’s role in restoration of peace and stability through political dialogue.

The UN secretary general also expressed support for efforts to save the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, urging all parties to honor their commitments under the accord.

In a separate gathering, Zarif and his German counterpart Heiko Maas discussed the future of the JCPOA and the necessity to preserve the deal.

The two ministers also talked about the situation in Syria and efforts to restore stability to the Arab country through political talks, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website.

They further weighed plans to enhance the bilateral relations between Tehran and Berlin in various fields.

Another Tuesday meeting, held between Zarif and Norway’s Foreign Minister Ine Marie Eriksen Soreide, revolved around the JCPOA, settlement of crises in Syria and Yemen, and plans to boost the economic ties between Iran and Norway.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and started to implement it in January 2016.

Ever since the deal took effect, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA in all quarterly reports, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.

US President Donald Trump has on various occasions called for renegotiating the JCPOA or terminating it but Iran and most other parties to the deal say the nuclear agreement is a valid multilateral international document that would not be renegotiated.
