Top Banker: US Obstruction Depriving Iran of JCPOA Benefits

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US obstructive moves have deprived Iran of economic benefits of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) said.

Speaking at a televised program on Saturday night, Valiollah Seif said the obstructive policies of Washington have prevented Iran from enjoying the “necessary economic benefits” of the JCPOA, the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).

He said European banks have failed to create appropriate links with Iran due to fear of the US.

However, he added, with European governments’ support for specific banks that work with Iran, one could expect a bright prospect for future.

Iran and the Group 5+1 reached the 159-page nuclear agreement in July 2015 and started to implement it in January 2016.

Ever since the deal took effect, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed Iran’s compliance with the JCPOA in all quarterly reports, but some other parties, especially the US, have failed to live up to their undertakings.

Two months after coming into force of the nuclear deal, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said Americans had yet to fulfill what they were supposed to do as per the nuclear deal.

Iran still has problems in its banking transactions or in restoring its frozen assets, because Western countries and those involved in such processes are afraid of Americans, the Leader said at the time, criticizing the US for its moves to prevent Iran from taking advantage of the sanctions removal.
