"Late on Sunday, the president met with the members of the Russian government," Peskov said. "In his address to them, Putin thanked all cabinet members, government officials for the results achieved in dealing with the tasks facing Russia."

"The president stressed that the six year (of the government’s term) were very rich in new challenges and extraordinary developments both inside the country and in the world," he said.

"Firmness and consistency, readiness to undertake responsibility and implement decisions on the basis on present-day approaches were needed from the government and members of the government demonstrated these qualities," he quoted the president.

"The cabinet worked well, as a real team, thanks, as Putin noted, to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev," he added.

The current government was formed in 2012 when Dmitry Medvedev was appointed prime minister, although minor reshuffles took place. On Monday, when the current office term of the Russian president expires, the cabinet is to resign, with its members staying in the capacity of acting officials until a new government is formed.
