Senior Official Pledges Iran’s Continued Support for Iraq

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council applauded Iraq for holding the first election since victory over the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, assuring the Arab country of Iran’s continued support and close cooperation.

In a message on Monday, Ali Shamkhani congratulated the Iraqi government, people and religious authorities on holding the first parliamentary election since victory over Daesh.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran will stand with the people of Iraq and the establishment legitimized by their will, as it did in all the past tough stages, and will continue its strategic cooperation (with Iraq) and its efforts for the strengthening and development of Iraq,” he added.

On Saturday, Iraqis voted in the first parliamentary election since the country declared victory over Daesh terrorist group at the end of 2017.

Preliminary official results show the coalition led by Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr's bloc is ahead, followed by the Fatah Alliance led by Hadi al-Ameri.
