Iranian President Sends Message to Uganda
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Iranian deputy foreign minister met Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, delivering a message from Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
In the meeting in Kampala, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi and the Ugandan leader discussed relations between the two countries and the Iran nuclear deal.
Passing on a written message from Iran’s president, Sarmadi called for concerted action by independent states to counter the US’ illogical policies and unilateral measures, which he said threaten world peace and security.
Museveni, for his part, voiced support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), saying he is closely monitoring developments surrounding the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and hopes that efforts to save the accord would yield results.
Deploring the US' “unacceptable policies” and unilateral measures, the Ugandan president stressed the need for joint efforts to strengthen multilateralism.
Museveni also expressed Uganda’s readiness and determination to boost its relations with Iran in all fields.
The Iranian administration has enhanced political contacts with foreign leaders in recent weeks on the ways to save the JCPOA after the US exit.
On Thursday, Ali Akbar Velayati, an international adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for talks on various issues, including the JCPOA and Tehran-Moscow “strategic” alliance.
On May 8, the US president pulled his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.
