Damascus to Resume Pivotal Role in Region after War, President Assad Says

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian president said as soon as the foreign-backed conflict is over, Damascus will resume its pivotal role in the region and restore its ties with Arab states.

World

Syrian President Bashar Assad told Kuwaiti newspaper Wednesday that Syria has reached a "major understanding" with Arab states after exercising years of war.

Arab and Western delegations have begun visiting Syria to prepare for the reopening of diplomatic and other missions, he said, AP reported.

Soon the war will be over, Assad told the paper's publisher, Syria will resume its pivotal role in the region.

Syria's membership in the 22-member Arab League was suspended in the early days of the war and Arab countries later imposed economic sanctions after they failed to mediate an end to the war.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. The Syrian government says the Israeli regime and its Western and regional allies are aiding Takfiri terrorist groups wreaking havoc in the country.
