Zarif Highlights Growing Condemnation of US Sanctions on Iran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted the widespread criticism of American sanctions on Iran’s medical and scientific sectors by referring to a letter from scientific societies to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

In a post on his Twitter account on Wednesday, Zarif mentioned a letter that 66 Iranian communities have written to the UN chief in condemnation of the US sanctions.

“66 Scientific Societies for Medical Sciences in Iran call on int'l community to: condemn US sanctions on Iran; strongly resist the targeting of medical needs & humanitarian aid; and thwart targeting of research & scientific advancement,” Zarif wrote.

The Iranian minister also attached a copy of the letter to Guterres.

In November 2018, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that contrary to what the US government claims, Washington’s sanctions and pressures are aimed at harming the people of Iran.

The claim that the US is seeking to mount pressure on the Iranian government and not on the people is totally wrong, Rouhani said, adding, “With their inappropriate and wrong sanctions and by targeting (Iran’s) banking system and oil exports… Americans want to negatively impact the life and daily livelihood of the people.”

The president also said the US claim that medicine, foodstuff and medical equipment are exempted from the anti-Iran sanctions is untrue, because imposing sanctions on Iran’s banking system would affect trade in all areas.
