Iraq Says to Open Syrian Border after Talks with Iranian, Syrian Generals

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iraq's armed forces chief of staff on Monday expressed hope that the country's border crossing with Syria would be opened in the coming days after meeting his Syrian and Iranian counterparts in Damascus.

"God willing the coming days will witness the opening of the border crossing and the continuation of visits and trade between the two countries," Lt. Gen. Othman al-Ghanimi said at a news conference broadcast by Syrian state television, Reuters reported.

Heading a high-ranking military delegation, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri has traveled to Damascus to attend trilateral talks with his Syrian and Iraqi counterparts on ways to boost military ties and strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

In recent years, the Middle East region has been plagued with Takfiri terrorist groups like Daesh (also known as ISIS or ISIL), which are believed to have been created and supported by the West and some regional Arab countries.

The terrorist groups, which claim to be Islamic but whose actions are anything but, have been committing heinous crimes not only against non-Muslims, but mostly against Muslims in the region.

Iraq and Syria have been gripped by insurgency with various terrorist groups, including Daesh, fighting their central governments.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of the countries and supports their legitimate governments in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
