In the first leg of his tour of Central Asia, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visited Tashkent and held talks with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov on Monday.

The two senior diplomats discussed a broad range of issues in the gathering, focusing on ways to expand the economic interaction between the two nations.

They also talked about the opportunities for the enhancement of political, parliamentary, and cultural ties between Tehran and Tashkent.

Among the other issues discussed by Zarif and Kamilov were the unilateral US sanctions on Iran, contribution to the Afghan peace process, and cooperation in legal and international organizations.

Highlighting Iran’s major role in the region and its international influence, the Uzbek foreign minister called for closer interaction with the Islamic Republic considering its potential for transportation activities and its ports by the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Zarif is going to visit Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan afterwards.
