Syria Denounces Fresh US Sanctions against Health Sector

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Syrian Foreign Ministry denounced "inhuman measures" used by the United States to target the Arab country's healthcare system.

The US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has been criticized by the Syrian ministry for enacting fresh sanctions that would prevent the Arab country from importing medical supplies and replacement parts.

Such illegal and unethical sanctions on the Syrian people are "inhuman measures" and are part of the unilateral siege imposed by the United States, said a statement by the ministry.

It noted that the targeted hospitals that provide health care for millions of Syrians require urgent action by the UN, the World Health Organization, and the Red Cross to put an end to such sanctions.

Syria's state institutions introduced earlier in the month a four-day work week following acute fuel shortages as Syrian oil continues to be looted by US occupation forces, and as Washington's unilateral sanctions against Syria result in a continued decline of oil resources.

It is important to note that oil production has been limited by the fact that several of the oil-producing facilities in Syria remain outside the government's control; under US occupation. Furthermore, oil and petroleum imports have become increasingly difficult due to unilateral sanctions against Syria.
