Arab States Take Impartial Stance in Ukraine-Russia Conflict

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan stated that Riyadh and other Arab states are adopting a neutral position in the Ukraine-Russia conflict and are committed to preserving relationships with both sides.

The minister's remarks came after the conclusion of the Arab League summit in Jeddah on Friday, which Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky attended.

"Since the beginning of the crisis, the Arab countries have maintained a position of positive neutrality, engaging in dialogue with the Russian and Ukrainian parties while ensuring Arab relations with both sides," the diplomat stated. He added, "We welcome hearing the viewpoints of both sides of the Russia-Ukrainian conflict."

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian leader argued, without singling out specific nations, that some Arab countries were turning a blind eye to Moscow's illegal annexations of territory.

"Unfortunately, there are some in the world and here, among you, who turn a blind eye to prisoner of war cages and illegal annexations," the president asserted. "I am here so that everyone can take an honest look. Regardless of Russia's attempts to influence others, there must still be independence."

Saudi Arabia has chosen not to participate in Western sanctions against Moscow, including efforts to restrict its energy exports. Riyadh's ongoing cooperation with Russia through OPEC+, a consortium of oil-exporting nations, has faced criticism from the United States. Nevertheless, Riyadh expresses hope in brokering a resolution to the conflict and pledges to maintain trade and diplomatic ties with both Russia and Ukraine.

Following his meeting with Zelensky earlier on Friday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized "the kingdom's readiness to continue mediating efforts between Russia and Ukraine." He voiced support for all international endeavors aimed at achieving a political resolution that contributes to security.

In 2022, the Saudi foreign minister visited Kiev and Moscow for high-level talks. Later, he revealed that bin Salman was involved in negotiating a prisoner swap between the two sides in September, which he hailed as a humanitarian breakthrough.
