Daesh Terrorists Kill 10 Soldiers in Northern Syria Attack

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists reportedly killed ten Syrian soldiers in an attack on military checkpoints, on the evening of August 7, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

The attack was directed at military checkpoints belonging to the Syrian army and local allied fighters situated in the town of Maadan Ateeq in the eastern countryside of Raqqa. Following the attack, Daesh militants set fire to military vehicles and prefabricated houses before withdrawing from the area, The Cradle reported.

Recent weeks have seen an increase in Daesh's attacks on Syrian government targets. On August 1, the terror group targeted a convoy of oil tankers guarded by the Syrian army in the desert, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including two civilians, as reported by SOHR.

Sources within Syria confirmed that the attackers employed machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, the monitor stated.

Late in July, Daesh claimed responsibility for a bombing near Damascus that claimed the lives of at least six individuals close to the capital's revered Sayyida Zeinab shrine, a prominent Shiite pilgrimage site.

This resurgence of Daesh's activities coincides with heightened US reinforcement of its contested bases in Syria's northeast, a move that has drawn criticism for its illegality.

Daesh originally gained a foothold in Syria following the release of its leadership from Bucca prison in Iraq in 2009 and 2010 by US officials. Subsequently, militants migrated to Syria to wage a clandestine war against Damascus, supported by foreign countries including US and UK. The conflict was instigated through attacks on Syrian security forces under the guise of anti-government protests.

While US officials assert their presence in Syria's northeast is aimed at preventing Daesh's resurgence, analysts contend that the US exercises significant control over Syria's key oil fields, bolstering its geopolitical influence through territorial gains made by proxy militias.
