Iran Reaffirms Right to Water Share of Hirmand

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Reasserting Iran’s right to share of water from the Hirmand River, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Iranian technical delegations’ visits to water reserves in Afghanistan will lead to more transparency about the issue.

In a telephone conversation on Saturday, Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian and Taliban's acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi talked about a series of bilateral issues.

Amirabdollahian reaffirmed Iran’s right to the Hirmand River water, referred to the recent visit by an Iranian technical team to Afghanistan, and said such trips would boost transparency in line with the 1970 Hirmand agreement.

The foreign minister also referred to the freedom of an Iranian journalist in Afghanistan and called for the resolution of some issues between the two sides.

Amirabdollahian underlined that Iran has always wished well for Afghanistan and the good people of that country, the Foreign Ministry’s website reported.

Pointing to the presence of many Afghan nationals in Iran, Amirabdollahian said Tehran puts emphasis on cooperation between all sides in Afghanistan to bring stability, security and welfare to the country’s people.

For his part, Muttaqi thanked Iran and said efforts are underway to resolve problems.

He also invited Amirabdollahian to visit Afghanistan, noting that Tehran-Kabul ties are based on neighborliness and brotherhood.
