UNSC Postpones Vote on Humanitarian Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire for 2nd Time

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The UN Security Council deferred the vote on a draft resolution proposing a Gaza ceasefire for humanitarian aid delivery for the second consecutive time, with the US expressing reservations about the text.

The vote, initially scheduled for late Tuesday, was postponed as the United States remained unconvinced about the resolution, according to information from UN sources obtained by Anadolu.

Scheduled for a vote on Wednesday, the resolution, crafted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), urges an immediate cessation of hostilities to facilitate safe humanitarian access and seeks steps towards a sustainable end to hostilities. It emphasizes adherence to international law by all parties and calls for the swift deployment of a UN monitoring mechanism.

Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, Robert Wood, stated earlier on Tuesday that discussions on the text were ongoing with various stakeholders. He said, "We're working on this issue right now, and we'll see what happens later today. But that's all I can tell you at this point."

Notably, on December 8, the US vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amid escalating violence. Since October 7, Israel's air and ground assaults have resulted in at least 20,000 Palestinian casualties, predominantly women and children, as per health authorities in Gaza.

The conflict has left Gaza devastated, with half of its housing stock damaged or destroyed, and nearly 2 million people displaced within the densely-populated enclave, grappling with shortages of food and clean water.
