D-8 to Convene Extraordinary Meeting on Gaza Issue in Istanbul

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, is set to hold a special gathering of its foreign ministers in Istanbul on Saturday, June 8th, to address the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza.

The meeting in Istanbul carries significant weight as it aims to establish a unified stance against the ongoing military aggression by the Israeli regime in the Gaza Strip since October 7th last year.

Comprising eight Islamic nations including Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Bangladesh, the D-8 group's decision-making body, the Council of Ministers, will convene to deliberate on this pressing issue.

"Pakistan's Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Indonesia's Retno Marsudi, Malaysia's Mohammad Hassan, Iran's Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri, and Bangladesh's Minister of Welfare Dipo Moni, along with senior officials from Egypt and Nigeria, are anticipated to attend," stated sources from the Eight Developing Islamic Countries group.

The session, scheduled to take place at the historic Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul on June 8, 2024, comes following an invitation from Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakkan Fidan, aiming to garner greater support and solidarity within the D-8 coalition for the people of Palestine, especially those in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Moreover, the extraordinary gathering will witness discussions on humanitarian aid and other essential measures to alleviate the ongoing hardships and suffering endured by the Palestinian population.

The primary focus of the meeting is to coordinate collective efforts aimed at ending the atrocities committed by the Zionist regime in the Gaza Strip.

Since the onset of the Zionist regime's genocidal war in Gaza in October 2023, the Islamic Republic of Iran has actively utilized various international multilateral mechanisms to assist the defenseless population. The gathering of D-8 foreign ministers in Istanbul provides yet another platform to advance responsible diplomacy in this regard.

Following the meeting's conclusion, a joint statement outlining the member countries' collective stance in support of Gaza and against the oppressive regime of Israel is expected to be released.
