Iranian Parliamentary Delegation Departs for Latin America

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - A delegation of Iranian parliamentarians left Tehran on Monday for the Latin American nations of Cuba and Venezuela after a change in the flight route.

The parliamentary team, headed by Chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi, is scheduled to pay a six-day visit to those two countries.

Three lawmakers accompany Boroujerdi in the Latin American tour.

The Iranian delegates were expected to fly to Cuba earlier on Sunday, however, the flight was canceled after the US said it would deny its airspace to the plane carrying the lawmakers.

“The delegation was scheduled to travel to Venezuela and Cuba today; but, the Americans have notified the Aeroflot airline (which was scheduled to provide the transport service to the Iranian delegation) that they will not allow the plane to pass through US skies,” Boroujerdi said on Sunday.

Ultimately, the plane carrying the Iranian delegation took off early on Monday after a change in the flight route to get around the US airspace.

It comes after the parliamentary delegation headed by Boroujerdi visited Syria and held meetings with high-ranking Syrian officials.

In December, a senior Iranian lawmaker emphasized the necessity to enhance ties with parliaments of other countries, adding that the legislature has invited a number of parliamentary groups to pay a visit to Tehran.
