Iranian FM Underlines Enhanced Security Cooperation with Pakistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Sartaj Aziz, the Pakistani prime minister’s adviser on national security and foreign affairs, in a meeting in Tehran discussed closer cooperation between the two countries in security fields.

During the meeting on Monday, Zarif described Pakistan as one of Iran’s main friends and stressed the need for the two countries to boost bilateral relations in different political, economic and cultural fields.

The top Iranian diplomat also attached importance to the upgrading of security cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad in border areas.

Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement in February 2013, under which both countries are required to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crimes, fighting terrorism and countering the activities that pose a threat to the national security of either country.

Iran has repeatedly called on Pakistan to abide by the terms of the agreement.

Sartaj Aziz, for his part, referred to the common grounds between Iran and Pakistan, and said Islamabad is ready to expand mutual cooperation with Tehran.

He also stressed the importance of an upcoming visit by Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to Iran for the development of ties between the two neighboring countries.

Nawaz Sharif is scheduled to pay a visit to Iran next month.
