Iranian Official Decries Foreign Interference in Afghanistan

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Head of the Strategic Research Center of Iran's Expediency Council Ali Akbar Velayati deplored as a “mistake” the interference of foreigners in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

Iran believes that Afghanistan’s internal problems should be addressed by Afghans themselves, Velayati said in Tehran on Sunday.

He made the comments in a meeting with Nicholas Haysom, the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Representative and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).

Velayati further voiced Iran’s willingness to enhance relations with neighboring Afghanistan.

The two officials also discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the region.

Earlier in January, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif paid an official visit to Afghanistan and held talks with the eastern neighbor’s high-ranking officials.

Iran’s Vice-President for Executive Affairs Mohammad Shariatmadari also travelled to Afghanistan this week to reiterate Tehran’s full support for Kabul.

Iran considers participation in the all-out development of Afghanistan as an economically, politically, socially, and culturally valuable mission, the vice-president said on February 17.
