Rockets Hit US Military Bases in Western Iraq, Eastern Syria
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Two key US outposts in western Iraq and on the other side of the border in eastern Syria have been attacked at the same time, over a week after the US military executed a deadly air raid against Iraqi soldiers fighting Daesh terrorists.
Iraqi military sources said a rocket launcher fixed on the back of a mini-truck was used in Wednesday's attack and was found on nearby farmland.
According to reports, the Ain al-Assad air base hosting US troops in the western province of Anbar was targeted with multiple rockets.
The US military has confirmed the attack on Ain al-Assad.
US Army Colonel Wayne Marotto, spokesman for the US-led international military coalition, tweeted that the rockets landed on the base and its perimeter.
“At approx. 12:30 PM local time, Ain Al-Assad Air Base was attacked by 14 rockets. The rockets landed on the base & perimeter. Force protection defensive measures were activated. At this time initial reports indicate 3 minor injuries. Damage is being assessed,” the colonel wrote in his post on twitter.
Simultaneously, the military base run by the American troops at the al-Omar oilfield in Syria’s eastern province of Deir Ez-Zur was also hit.
According to Syrian news agency SANA, mortar rounds were fired into the base for the third time in recent days.
Militants from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of mainly Kurdish forces fighting against Damascus, reportedly claimed that they had thwarted the attack.
