WHO Condemns Israel's 'Harrowing' Strike on Gaza's Maghazi Refugee Camp

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The World Health Organization strongly denounced Israel for its recent airstrike on a refugee camp in Gaza, which resulted in the deaths of at least 70 Palestinians, as the conflict in the region continues to escalate.

"WHO's team heard harrowing accounts shared by health workers and victims of the suffering caused by the explosions," the UN health agency's chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a Monday post on X social media platform.

He highlighted poignant accounts shared by health workers and victims affected by the strike, noting instances where entire families were lost, stating, "One child had lost their whole family in the strike on the camp. A nurse at the hospital suffered the same loss, with his entire family killed."

His remarks came a day after an Israeli strike targeted the al-Maghazi refugee camp in Gaza, an area already reeling from an ongoing Israeli genocidal war. Gaza's Health Ministry reported that the attack demolished a residential block, raising concerns of a potentially increasing death toll due to the high number of families living there, many of whom might still be trapped under debris.

"Palestinian health authorities confirmed 70 casualties, with Al-Aqsa Hospital overwhelmed, receiving approximately 100 casualties," Tedros shared, highlighting the hospital's struggle to accommodate patients beyond its capacity.

Expressing grave concern, he emphasized the urgency for an immediate ceasefire, stating, "Many will not survive the wait. This latest strike on a Gazan community underscores the imperative need for a #CeasefireNOW."

The Israeli regime’s escalating hostilities have placed immense strain on Gaza's few operational hospitals, exacerbating an already weakened health system. Tedros underscored the severity of the situation, stating, "Most of the health system has been decimated, leaving hospitals struggling to cope."

As casualties continue to rise, the toll from the Israeli regime's aggression stands at 20,674 Palestinians killed, predominantly women and children, escalating concerns over the dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
