Iran Raps UN Human Rights Resolution as Baseless
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations rejected a UN resolution containing allegations of human rights violation against Tehran as unsubstantiated, describing it as a result of policies of pushing for Iranophobia.
Gholam-Hossein Dehqani said the Canada-drafted resolution that contains spurious allegations against Iran reveals an attempt at “selective and political” distortion of the facts about Iran.
He also denounced the resolution as a result of a “short-sighted” approach that “deliberately ignores the threats of violent extremism to the region and attempts to promote Iranophobia.”
The resolution, which was approved with 76 votes in favor, 35 against and 68 abstentions, accuses Iran of human rights violations. However, support for the measure has declined compared to a similar resolution last year.
Taking a swipe at Canada for continuing “hostile and unjustifiable” policies towards Iran, Dehqani recommended the new Ottawa government to adopt constructive interaction and dialogue rather than insisting on the futile policy of the last 13 years.
He said the biased resolution comes while Iran is pursuing the policy of constructive interaction that resulted in the July nuclear deal, which was a landmark success for diplomacy and dialogue.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany - also known as P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
The agreement, reached after months of tight negotiations, is going to end all nuclear-related sanctions against Iran after taking effect.
