TEHRAN (Tasnim) – People took to the streets of the Shiite-populated al-Awamiyah village in Qatif region of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Monday to mark the first anniversary of the execution of prominent cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by the Saudi regime.

During the rally, which started from Shahid Khalid guest house, the participants carried signs and chanted the slogan “He is always alive”.

They also condemned the kingdom for executing the cleric on trumped-up charges.

Iran’s holy city of Qom and Bahraini town of Diraz were scenes of similar demonstrations on Sunday.

On January 2, 2016, Saudi Arabia executed 47 prisoners, including Sheikh Nimr.

The senior cleric was detained in July 2012 on charges of delivering anti-regime speeches and defending political prisoners.

His arrest sparked widespread protests in the Arab country, leaving several people dead.

Nimr’s Qatif-area hometown of Awamiya has been the scene of repeated security incidents since 2011.
